Structured Strategic Planning
A Practical Guide to
Formulating and Implementing
Corporate, Business Unit and Cost Center Strategies
Structured Strategic Planning presents a structured framework for quickly
and decisively developing strategic plans and complementary implementation plans
in order to maximize shareholder value.
Strategic Planning: The Big Picture:
Acknowledgment
In 1986 I read Michael E. Porter's book Competitive Advantage. After ten
years as an IT development manager, I switched professions from IT to strategic
planning:
- Strategic Planner for MHT (now JPMorganChase)
- The Corporate Planner for The Home Insurance Company
- Principal - Structured Strategic Planning (a consulting business)
- Senior Marketing Manager at IBM
- The Corporate Planner at CGU Insurance (now OneBeacon)
After fifteen action-packed years developing strategies for over 100
businesses, mostly in financial service and information technology, I still
believe Michael Porter's theories are the best in the industry. (That is not
to say that others have not made major contributions as well, just that Porter
stands out among the rest.) I want to
thank Michael Porter for providing the theoretical foundation which makes it
easy to develop excellent plans for any company. Knowing the right questions
and the right order to ask those questions are invaluable.
