Critical Success Factors of the Planning Process

  • Integrity (of planning methodology used)
  • Involvement (of multi-functional team)
  • Iteration & Improvement (of management decision making)

The critical success factors of a corporate-wide planning process include the following:

1. Use a good, structured, planning methodology (like the one outlined on this site).

2. Involve people throughout the company who perform key functions.

3. Rather than one long planning exercise in which a long novel is written
from beginning to end, start at the top with the most important issues
and continue refining the plan over time.

The process needs to be formal.  Thinking is required.  Creativity is a plus.  Someone needs to write the plan down.  It needs to be communicated.  It can always be updated; but at any given moment in time it should be clear to all what the strategy is.

The same managers who seek to avoid even a taste of a bureaucratic planning process are often the same managers who are hungry for a logical approach to planning.
