Identification of Useful Shortcuts

Planning doesn't have to be difficult. Planning, even for a large diversified global company, can and should be relatively straight forward.

Your company is composed of 'X' number of strategically relevant businesses, each of which should have a business strategy, even if only one page in length.

Your company is composed of 'Y' number of strategically relevant horizontal units or cost centers, each requiring a statement of direction, even if only one page in length.

Your company needs a corporate strategy, even if only one page in length.

For each of the three types of plans just listed, it helps to begin with a well designed template document that captures the critical elements of a high-quality planning process.

The best and fastest way to guarantee that strategic plans will be developed and implemented is for senior management to respond to requests for money or people by stating, "Show me in your plan how those resources would support your competitive strategy and route to competitive advantage."
