The 1-Page SBU Plan

This page outlines a framework for developing a quick SBU plan. It is useful for businesses that do not require a comprehensive plan and for executives who need one but are unable or unwilling to spend the time for more than one page.

The basic components of the one-page plan are driven by the basic concepts of industry structure and competitive positioning. The third section of the one-page plan lists the action steps necessary to successfully implement the chosen strategy.

For the one-page SBU plan, divide the page into three parts:

1. Industry Analysis - define the industry's scope in terms of size, product varieties, customer types, and geographic scope; identify leading and significant competitors and likely new entrants; also list important industry trends.

2. Competitive Positioning - choose the product varieties and customer types that will be targeted; clearly state the competitive advantage the business is trying to achieve; and summarize key financial data.

3. Action steps - identify major plans and programs necessary to implement the chosen strategy.
