The  1-Page Corporate Plan

First, define the corporate vision in one sentence.

Second, identify the corporate businesses and how many people and dollars are allocated to each.

Third, analyze key competitors in terms of their corporate strategy and their business mix.

Fourth, determine which functions will be totally centralized, which will be decentralized, and which will be partially centralized. If appropriate, group businesses together into divisions or sectors based upon tangible interrelationships that will maximize competitive advantage in the future. Also identify cross-business programs for cross-business opportunities.

Fifth, identify potential industries to enter and potential corporate businesses to divest. Based on relative industry attractiveness and competitive position of each corporate SBU, re-allocate people and financial resources to optimize corporate results.

Given the identification of the corporation's strategic business units the basic design of a strategic information database can easily be constructed. A strategic information database includes significantly more information than just financial data. It is useful to include information about the industry as well as about the business.  For example, the vital statistics page at the beginning of the SBU template document lists relevant industry and business unit data that should be recorded for each SBU.

Using spreadsheet software, a relational database or regular lined paper, the key strategic information database of a corporation can easily be designed and maintained. This strategic information should represent the heart of any executive information system.
